Great Sandy National Park (Fraser Island)

Great Sandy National Park, which comprises Rainbow Beach on the Queensland mainland and Fraser Island just off the coast, is a favorite weekend destination of Brisbanites. Fraser Island in particular provides a variety of activities for people who love the outdoors.

Interestingly, most visitors’ favorite aspects of the island aren’t even the ocean beaches.  The lakes — particularly Mckenzie and Wabby — steal the show. Lake Wabby, a green-colored freshwater lake surrounded by sand dunes, will actually disappear completely under the sand over time, so go see it before it’s gone! And Lake Mckenzie, with its sea foam and cerulean hues, is an unmissable point of interest on Fraser Island. Make sure you also check out the ruins of the SS Marino shipwreck, explore the rainforest walk further inland, lounge in the rock pools on the island’s coast, and float down Eli Creek. Fraser Island has so much to do that just a weekend might not even be enough!
